VERY UNOFFICIAL POINTS WRAP UP: All of the classes
were technically still up for grabs for the 2007 ASR Points Championship.
Pat Muller from Silver City, NM had the
Pro class Championship wrapped up after first round when the two racers
closest in points (George Vanatter and Geno Leyba) lost early. In the
street class Dennis "the Killer" Ward
from Wilcox, AZ and Brian Schuetta (the guy in the rental)
battled down to the semi finals to determine the points champ. Dennis
Ward made sure he won the championship finishing the season with another
street class win. But the big drama came down to the Motorcycle and
Modified classes, both determined in the final round of the last race
of the year. Going into the Mod final - Danny
Dean led the points over Andy Wiles. Wiles could have taken the
class points lead and won the championship for the second year in a
row but came up short in the final round against Travis Patterson. In
Motorcycle, Robert Bonjione has been leading the points all year long
with a 60 point advantage over Ryan Cairns
coming into this final race. But an early round loss for Bonjione left
a chance for Ryan to get the points lead if he could win the last two
rounds of the race. Ryan took out his brother Sean in the semis then
won the final over Juan Romero giving him the Motorcycle class points
championship. Congrats to the champs and the race winners!
Albuquerque
Dragway has new owners......
-
After months of negotiations, an agreement has been reached to buy the
assets of Labbate Enterprises LLC. The purchasing groups of Robert Costa,
Lawren Jones, and Bill Elliott have bought in as major share holders
of Labbate Enterprises LLC. Bob Labbate will be stepping down from his
track manager position but will still be involved in some of the day-to-day
activities. In his place, Lawren Jones will take over managing and promotion
of the track.
- The New Mexico Land Commissioner, Patrick Lyons, has assured the group
that they will get a new three year lease at the tracks existing location
but with the understanding that the group will need to build a new track
at a different location. Commissioners Lyons will provide land for the
group. The groups plan is the keep the current track operating for the
purpose of generating revenue, and at the same time keeping a safe place
to race for our racers. The excess revenue would then be used for construction
of the new facility.
- In closing, we have a big job ahead of us but we all feel very confident
that we will get the job done.
We are currently working on the 2008 schedule and hope to have it done
shortly.

Tribe plans Akela Flats Casino (Right across I-10 from ASR)
temporary facility using trailers under construction now
DEMING
— The forerunner to a planned 11,000-square-foot casino is under
construction about 40 miles west of Las Cruces, according to Fort Sill
Chiricahua Apache tribe consultant Denis Floge. The temporary facility
will sit on 30 acres of land off Interstate 10, just west of the Akela
Flats Trading Post. It will precede a planned "full blown"
$20 million casino at that location that will open in about two years,
Floge said. Akela Flats is located 18 miles east of Deming.-
